Washington Crossing Reenactment
Heavy snowfall overnight made for realistic reenactment conditions for Washington crossing the Delaware. We ventured down to the river with our friends visiting from Boston - no tea being tossed here though!
Our own crossing of the Washington bridge made its namesake’s revolutionary Christmas mission all the more bitterly appreciated as the biting wind tore at our faces. On the other side, the troops were being roused by a variety of speeches and historical accounts. The general looked particularly serious though. Perhaps because of his suboptimal layering of clothes, or because they announced that the water level was too low to attempt the crossing in the Durham boats. So once again the Brits can complain about the weather! A little less rainfall 249 years ago could have foiled George’s efforts, and perhaps changed the course of history.
Putting these butterfly effect musings to one side, we warmed up with some pepperoni pizza before grabbing a warm cuppa in Lambertville. I’m sure Washington’s troops would have been very jealous.
